The creative and spiritual journey of a (textile) recycler. . .

I have thought about starting a blog for a long time now. I just couldn’t seem to get started. I thought. . what would I say, what would I do and really . . . . . who would care.

Last year I had the great fortune to witness a ‘happening’. As a spouse at a reunion (I know, groan) I was both an observer and participant. This reunion was attended by some of the most creative and talented people on the face of the planet. Really, no exaggeration! But many were holding onto life long insecurities. They didn’t think they were talented enough and embarrassed to perform in front of each other for fear of . . who knows . . . finger pointing, whispers, laughter, ridicule of some sort for sure. Once it was revealed that many shared the same feelings, the healing began. And I was the lucky one. I got to witness it all and benefit as well.

So, the message is that we all think we are not good enough compared to someone else, but we are. Don’t let your fears and insecurities stop you. We can’t measure our own success by someone else’s talents.

This revelation and the kindness / support of strangers has propelled my creative journey to a place I had given up ever getting to. Tho I thought my creative juices were dried up forever, they have merely been reawakened. Many thanks to all involved in my process, including in-part . . Victoria B, Mrs. W., Charles Mc., Claudia H, Mary B, Cindy G, Sandy B, Traci B., Kat C, and my IAA family. So, thank you. I dedicate this blog to all of you!

Summertime Scavenger Hunt - 2013: Fisherman

Usually I have a crazy amount of pictures for each photo hunt category. Not  this time. When it came to fisherman I knew there was only one that I could ... or would post. You'll notice that there are no fish, poles or even water in the photo... but still a fisherman.

Every Saturday morning for almost 20 years I'd hear loud salsa music blaring in the driveway... at 6 a.m. I would bolt out the door, jump in the van and be off on an adventure. It was time to rock n' roll for the day. My friend and I would start out at the huge farmers market in the city, then the marketa in Mexicantown, then junkin' for the rest of the day until we pooped out and couldn't do it any more.

We spent most of the day looking for various treasures that appealed to us individually. Thankfully, we went after different things. My interested were textiles, dolls and kooky, arty, crafty stuff. While I was searching for my own score, my friend was busily looking in every nook and cranny of every garage sale for fishing poles, lures and the like. When he found something, he'd holler Bubbaaaaaaa. I'd turn to see his eyes lit up like a kid getting ready to pounce on presents under the Christmas tree. I remember one day in particular, he found two creels and his eyes actually started twirling. He was so excited he could barely eeck out a sound, which was highly unusual cause he never stopped talking.

What a treasure! To him, that was better than a big lottery win.

Those days are gone now. This is the two year anniversary of his sudden passing. I can't believe it's been that long already. I can still hear his voice, and see his face with the little sparkle in his eye when he found those fishing treasures. The contemplation of the next great fishing trip was written all over it.

Miss you Bubbs... it was a great run mi amigo....

Summertime Scavenger Hunt - 2013: Clouds

People tell me that they never see anything in clouds.

Well, there must be something wrong with me.
I see something in just about every cloud.

When you get to the end, feel free to tell me if I'm crazy or not...

flying bird
angel or crusader holding cross in right hand
man yelling or blowing wind
(head & shoulders, facing right)
shark going after little fish
long haired, beared man with smoke billowing out of pipe
(man facing left)
dragon, shark, boar traveling together
strong man
mouse

dinosaur
(mouth open, facing upward)
shark jumping in air
angel
(wings on left side of angel)
puppy sitting on cloud
skull
(2 dark eyes in center, mouth & chin at bottom)
curved hand reaching up

I can't tell you how many cool clouds I had to pass up.
Either traffic was moving too fast,
or the trucks blocked my view,
or too tall trees were in the way..
ugh.. so aggravating.

And no.. I don't take pix while driving. That's not safe.
I was the passenger.

So were you able to see what I saw??
Some of them have secondary images which I did not identify.

Cloud recognition is fascinating,
isn't it...

Summertime Scavenger Hunt - 2013: Candles

Still working on the photo scavenger hunt and
having a great time finding everything.

Candles aren't always the most exciting for me,
but I did manage to find of few that held some intrigue,
colorful attraction or
I just thought were pretty.

I'll let you guess which ones fell into which categories!

Ding Ding Ding.. I won!

My husband told me that I got a package in the mail today....
but I didn't order anything...
I'm confused.

I opened it with great trepidation.
I won some goodies on a blog.
What a nice surprise!

My bundle of goodies:
.... a magazine, a molding mat,
a package with paper and lace bits and
very nice handwritten note.

How cool!

I have come across some really terrific blogs over the last year or so, and Andria's Drawing Near is definitely one of them.
Maybe it's our shared love of junk shops and mixed media.
I don't know, but I think you'll definitely want to check it out.

Thank you Andria for selecting me in your most recent give-away.

Sunfest 2013

Last week I was in sunny downtown London... Ontario that is. Sunfest. Ah yes... a wonderful place to be if you're a music lover. What kind of music you ask.. all kinds... Salsa from Puerto Rico to Cumbia from Columbia and Reggae to brass from Rumania --- and let's not forget the jazz stage. Yummy.

Normally at an event like this I would take tons of photos, but I just didn't have it in me. I had badly twisted my ankle and broken a toe so moving back and forth thru crowds of 200,000 or more seemed like a recipe for disaster. None the less, I met some wonderful folks, saw some old friends, soaked up some glorious sun and did I mention the music?? OMG.. it was so wonderful.

Here's a short video of the sights and sounds from my week at Sunfest:

So again, you may be wondering... how the heck does this relate to recycling! Well never fear, I found some treasures to add to the recycle fabric pile. Let's see what I can do with these:

Those negative voices and a new friend...

It's funny how the Universe works. Someone I have worked with for over a decade left for another job. I was not happy... one, to lose contact with someone I had grown close to and two, not looking forward to breaking in a new business contact.

Well, in the infinite wisdom of the Universe, my new contact has the same history as me; the mom that demanded a perfection that could never be attained no matter how many ways I tried. I loved my mom and she loved me. I know that....and she was so fab in so many ways, but her need to demand perfection in me was really just a means of ignoring her own issues. Sometimes it was really challenging and always effected (or stifled)  my creativity...

Well, I think we, my new friend and I that is.... we were brought together to help each other overcome these voices in our heads...either the voices of others and/or our own negative scripts that have played over and over for years and years. I am clearly farther along in the process, but can always use another person on my side.... and hopefully thru my experiences she will overcome her voices much more quickly than I did.... at least that's what I hope for her. Too much time can pass otherwise, then the challenge seems unattainable.

Don't you find it amazing that when we most need something, it seems to end up right in front of us... in one way or another... well it's true... just look...

Random thought for today

I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started this blog... didn't know what direction it would take or if I'd even want to do for any length of time. And I don't blog regularly either, tho I do try. Sometimes, time is a challenge in itself.

Well, I am so happy that I ventured into this new territory because I have 'met' some great folks along the way, learned lots of new things, gotten some positive feedback on my work, made some treasured friendships, tried some new creative techniques and challenged myself in ways I never thought I would or could.... so it's not true at all... you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
I'm living proof!

While working on my own and fiddling around on the Internet, I've stumbled across too many really cool blogs in the late night hours. There are way too many to list, but here are a handful that draw me in (in complete random order):

The AAW Caroline (Heidelberg-esque) Project...

So the school year is done, the kids are gone... even the art installations have been removed. Here's another look at the work in progress......

...... and the end result for the four groups.

Below is a long shot of the front of the school with
the art installations.

The kids really responded well to this project and ran with the opportunity to create art in a new and unexpected way.

I think the expression on this young ladies face says it all...

Can't wait to see what the 3D class does with it next year....
